Goodreads Summary:

At 21, Calla hasn’t done a lot of things. She’s never been kissed, never seen the ocean, never gone to an amusement park. But growing up, she witnessed some things no child ever should. She still carries the physical and emotional scars of living with a strung-out mother, Mona—secrets she keeps from everyone, including her close circle of college friends.

But the safe cocoon Calla has carefully built is shattered when she discovers her mom has stolen her college money and run up a huge credit card debt in her name. Now, Calla has to go back to the small town she thought she’d left behind and clean up her mom’s mess again. Of course, when she arrives at her mother’s bar, Mona is nowhere to be found. Instead, six feet of hotness named Jackson James is pouring drinks and keeping the place humming.

Sexy and intense, Jax is in Calla’s business from the moment they meet, giving her a job and helping her search for Mona. And the way he looks at her makes it clear he wants to get horizontal . . . and maybe something more. Before Calla can let him get close, though, she’s got to deal with the pain of the past—and some very bad guys out to mess her up if she doesn’t give them her mom.

Fun Fact Friday: TATTOOS

I know it’s a pretty late night fun fact, but it took me a while to decide what to share this week… But here it is.

I learned something very important a few days ago.. it’s about tattoos.

I finally told my mother that on my 20th birthday (December 17th), I plan on getting my first tattoo. Now I’ve been thinking of getting a tattoo since I turned 18, but I wrestled a lot with the placement, and most importantly, what I wanted to get. I talked a lot with my friends, got a few ideas from favorite books I’ve read, then I contemplated my life and whether or not I should get something to reflect my life now.

But that’s when I learned something. Two of my good friends who both have tattoos said something that when I first heard it, I wasn’t really hearing it. At least not until a few weeks ago. They said “your tattoo doesn’t have to mean something.”

So at first I was like “What? Aren’t tattoos supposed to mean something? Something deep and meaningful and awe-inspiring?” Then I thought I wanted to get a tattoo to commemorate the death of my grandpa. But something still didn’t feel right..

I did more research. I looked up other people’s tattoos. I re-read some of my favorite books. Then I had a conversation with one of my favorite authors, Leigh Bardugo, about one of her book symbols. And that’s when it hit me. My tattoo doesn’t have to mean something. It can just be. I love the sun summoner symbol. I love that it comes from my favorite book. I love what it meant to the main character. I love that its actual appearance depends on where people are in the world. And that’s the first tattoo I’m going to get. No, it doesn’t mean anything deep or symbolic to my life. It just is. And I’m going to love it for what it is, even several years down the road.

Because it’s art. And who am I, a writer, to reject any type of art?

Goodreads Summary:

Julia Boyd has dated more than her share of jerks, and she’s done even pretending to like them. Putting her dating life on hold and focusing on her event planning career is a much safer bet for the blue-eyed blonde…until she meets her newest client.

Organizing the opening for an art gallery should be a breeze for Julia, but gallery owner Alex Holt is becoming very distracting. Tall and muscular with enough charisma and sexy dimples to make Julia swoon, Alex could be the perfect man. The two of them click immediately, creating enough witty banter to ignite sparks.

But just before flames of passion can erupt with Alex, Julia begins planning an engagement party…and learns the groom is Aiden, the man who broke her heart years ago. When Aiden admits that he still has feelings for Julia, everything changes. Should she seek shelter in the familiarity of the past, or should she risk everything on a brand-new love?

I’m super excited to be a part of the release day launch for a lot of reasons; one being that JLA is one of my favorite authors, but also because the characters in these stories are so much fun to read about. They have depth, sarcasm, wit, charm, and basically everything you’d ever want in a friend, or boyfriend, or girlfriend, or all of the above. JLA’s characters mean something dear to me, and hopefully you all will love her characters as much as I do!

In honor of STAY WITH ME’s release, feel free to check out my other reviews for Wait For You & Trust In Me. Besides that, there are a lot of wonderful treats available in this post today! Let’s start with the amazing trailer for Stay With Me!

STAY WITH ME Trailer:

So if you haven’t already read the synopsis to STAY WITH ME, fear not because I got you covered..

STAY WITH ME Synopsis:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wait for You and Be with Me comes a daring tale that pushes boundaries . . .

Ohhhhh steamy stuff, you guys. And of course, hot dudes. Don’t believe me on that? Ha, well then do I have a teaser for ya’ll… I have a feeling we are all going to love Jax just as much as we do our other JLA boys. Here’s a sneak peak:

Fashion male portrait

Oh boy. Is it hot in this blog post or is it just me?? Yet another reason to pick this book up – sexy guys! -fans self- But that’s not all, you guys. I have yet another teaser for you!

Portrait of happy loving couple

My, oh, my. Yeah, my excitment levels from before? Just skyrocketed to outer space. Yours should have too! But that’s not all! (Wow, I feel like a telemarketer or something, ha!) Because we have an excerpt from STAY WITH ME for all of you to start with TODAY! Because just in case you haven’t decided if you want to start the book now or next week, (p.s. you should really start it now).

STAY WITH ME Excerpt:

As I lay there, trying to swallow a loud, obnoxious yawn, I remembered something he’d said when we first met, about life being too short. I imagined he had firsthand experience with shortened lives while he was serving. That mentality came from experience. I got that now. Could even understand it, but there was something I didn’t understand.

“Why?” I asked.

There was a beat. “Why what?”

Jax sounded tired, and I should shut up or point out that I was now tired and could sleep, so he could leave. But I didn’t. “Why are you here? You don’t know me and . . .” I trailed off, because there really wasn’t anything left to say.

A minute went by, and he hadn’t answered my question, and then I think another minute ticked on, and I was okay with him not answering because maybe he didn’t even know. Or maybe he was just bored and that was why he was here.

But then he moved.

Jax pressed against my back, and the next breath I took got stuck in my throat. My eyes shot open. The sheet and blanket were between us, but they felt like nothing.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Getting comfortable.” He dropped an arm over my waist, and my entire body jerked against his. “It’s time to sleep I think.”

“But—”

“You can’t sleep when you talk,” he remarked.

“You don’t need to be all up on me,” I pointed out.

His answering chuckle stirred the hair along the back of my neck. “Honey, I’m not all up on you.”

I freaking begged to differ on that point. I started to wiggle away, but the arm around my waist tightened, holding me in place.

“You’re not going anywhere,” he announced casually, as if he wasn’t holding me prisoner in the bed.

Okay. The whole prisoner thing might be melodramatic, but he wasn’t letting me up. Not when he was getting all kinds of comfy behind me.

Oh my God, this was spooning. Total spooning. I was spooning with an honorary member of the Hot Guy Brigade. Did I wake up in a parallel universe?

“Sleep,” he demanded, as if the one word carried that much power. “Go to sleep, Calla.” This time his voice was softer, quieter.

“Yeah, it doesn’t work that way, Jax. You have a nice voice, but it doesn’t hold the power to make me sleep on your command.”

He chuckled.

I rolled my eyes, but the most ridiculous thing ever was the fact that after a couple of minutes, my eyes stayed shut. I . . . I actually settled in against him. With his front pressed to my back, his long legs cradling mine, and his arm snug around my waist, I actually did feel safe. More than that, I felt something else—something I hadn’t felt in years.

I felt cared for . . . cherished.

Which was the epitome of dumb, because I barely knew him, but feeling that, recognizing what the warm, buzzing feeling was, I fell right asleep.

Thank you guys so much for being here for the release day launch of STAY WITH ME. Expect a review of it on the blog some time this week because I will most likely devour that book so fast that I’ll make heads spin. Seriously. But guess what? -whispers- That’s not all.

ABOUT TAINTED (BOOK 1):

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julie Kenner (aka J. Kenner) …

“Can I just say that dying sucks?”

So begins the first installment of the Blood Lily Chronicles, an urban fantasy romance which introduces readers to Lily Carlyle, a tough-talking bad girl who’s been chosen to save the world, and Deacon Camphire, the darkly sensual alpha male whose words seduce her, but whose actions suggest he’s hiding secrets of his own, and only time will tell if he’s an angel, a demon, or something in between …

“A wonderful balance between urban fantasy and paranormal romance. A casual, catchy first-person point of view peppered with slightly more four-letter-words than the genre usually bears, mingled with a kick-ass heroine and a dangerous, smoking-hot hero makes for an excellent read.” The Discriminating Fangirl

When Lily Carlyle set out to kill a child molester, she never expected to die and be resurrected as an assassin. Especially not as an assassin charged with fighting the forces of darkness in the ultimate battle of good against evil. It’s the key into heaven, she’s told. And in light of her sins, without that key, she’s doomed to an eternity of suffering.

But even in the demon world it’s sometimes hard to tell your ally from your enemy.

And when Lily finds out the truth . . . well, there really will be hell to pay.

Goodreads Summary:

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

My Review:

When they said this book was a blend of Assassin’s creed and X-Men, I rolled my eyes because how could something be so incredibly awesome enough to combine two very awesome things?

But I was wrong.
It is so possible. And The Young Elites is that possibility.

If you’ve read Marie Lu’s Legend series then you know just how beautifully this author writes and how complex she writes her characters to be. Well now picture that and multiply it by ten and you have her newest book.
I honestly did not think Marie Lu could get any better as a writer than what she did with her Legend series, but I am so glad I was wrong.

I knew right away I was going to like this book when I reached a specific gory scene only four pages in, and after that, everything else just added to the “amazing factor” points.
I think the best part of this book is the main character of Adelina. She is so different from June in Marie’s Legend series. As the book starts off, I’m feeling sympathetic toward Adelina but I’m also weary of her. It’s hard to trust her point of view, especially towards the end. She’s not as good a person as she thinks, or at least pretends to be. She has a darkness in her, which is constantly talked about throughout the novel. But this darkness is different than any other type of evil we read about in books. Probably because you’re still rooting for this evil girl to come out on top.
Adelina’s darkness is so real and raw and it stems from basic human emotions of fear and anger – something everyone has, but for Adelina it is magnified on epic proportions because of her childhood and how she was used throughout her life. Adelina is so full of resentment and anger that it is impossible to see her as the “good guy” or the hero of this story. Frankly, none of the characters in this book are actually “good” or heroic. Which is awesome! It’s a refreshing take on YA protagonists.

The world that Lu places us in is a cool blend of the older centuries but also a futuristic vibe at certain parts. That’s probably where you get the whole mixture of Assassin’s Creed and X-Men reference.

It was hard to get a clear sense of the relationships between Adelina and the other Elites, but I think that was the point. There’s no real relationships, at least not how Adelina thinks there is. And that is so pivotal to her character development. If anything, I wish I knew more about the Elites. I want to know more about Enzo and Lucent and Michel. Raffaele’s backstory is sort of there, but I’d still like to know more. But this is, of course, Adelina’s story. I think as the story develops and we reach the end (THE HEARTBREAKING AND TEAR INDUCING ENDING – MY GODS), the story expands and there will be new characters and the arch of the story will expand to other characters besides Adelina. Especially with the more people she interacts with.

I cannot boast enough about this book though, guys. It is so so good. I knew Marie Lu was a badass writer but DAMN, this blew everything out of the water for me. Amazingly developed characters, intriguing plot, and great pacing as far as action and tension and romance goes.

If you were a fan of Legend, then you need to read this book.
If you are a fan of Marie Lu, then you need to read this book.
If you love reading, then you need to read this book.
If you enjoy breathing, then YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK.

There, I think I’ve drilled into your skills enough now.
Overall, fantastic read. I am literally chomping at the bit for book 2 – and book 1 isn’t even out yet! Gah!

MY RATING: 5/5

P.S. I sincerely apologize if the format for this post is all weird and not like the others. I’m on vacation in Vegas right now with NO WIFI. I think I’m being punished by some cosmic overlord. Either way, I had to work from mobile to post this, so I’m sorry!
