Best and Worst (Or At Least Not So Great) Books of 2015

Hey, people!

Today’s post is my favorite posts to do at the end of the year, and I say that with this being the second year I get to do this… But I do always like to reflect on all the books I’ve read in a year and figure out which are my absolute favorites and which I could have done without. Seriously, I probably could have done without some of the ridiculously, outrageously outlandish books I read in 2015 but, eh, what can you do? Sometimes you have to get a few sour ones to really appreciate the sweet ones.

Fall Book Challenge 2015!

Hey, guys!

It has been a while since I’ve reviewed books, but to be honest, I’ve been so busy with school that I haven’t had time to read anything anyway. The sad reality of being a full-time student. But I did manage to make a fall book challenge!

Watch, make fun of, laugh, and then create your own!

Also, keep your eye on the 8-bit heart mug on my nightstand. It does some pretty cool shit.

If you do partake in this challenge, be sure to use the hashtag #FallBookChallenge15 so I can see all your answers! And tweet it to me! —> People Like Books.

Fun Fact Friday: TATTOOS

I know it’s a pretty late night fun fact, but it took me a while to decide what to share this week… But here it is.

I learned something very important a few days ago.. it’s about tattoos.

I finally told my mother that on my 20th birthday (December 17th), I plan on getting my first tattoo. Now I’ve been thinking of getting a tattoo since I turned 18, but I wrestled a lot with the placement, and most importantly, what I wanted to get. I talked a lot with my friends, got a few ideas from favorite books I’ve read, then I contemplated my life and whether or not I should get something to reflect my life now.

But that’s when I learned something. Two of my good friends who both have tattoos said something that when I first heard it, I wasn’t really hearing it. At least not until a few weeks ago. They said “your tattoo doesn’t have to mean something.”

So at first I was like “What? Aren’t tattoos supposed to mean something? Something deep and meaningful and awe-inspiring?” Then I thought I wanted to get a tattoo to commemorate the death of my grandpa. But something still didn’t feel right..

I did more research. I looked up other people’s tattoos. I re-read some of my favorite books. Then I had a conversation with one of my favorite authors, Leigh Bardugo, about one of her book symbols. And that’s when it hit me. My tattoo doesn’t have to mean something. It can just be. I love the sun summoner symbol. I love that it comes from my favorite book. I love what it meant to the main character. I love that its actual appearance depends on where people are in the world. And that’s the first tattoo I’m going to get. No, it doesn’t mean anything deep or symbolic to my life. It just is. And I’m going to love it for what it is, even several years down the road.

Because it’s art. And who am I, a writer, to reject any type of art?

Quick Update + Comic Con Recap

Hey ya’ll

I know…it has been far too long. I apologize for the lack of posts/reviews lately. I got back from Comic Con on Sunday and then had work the next day and oi, just a lot going on and little rest. My life story.

But (hooray!) new post today!

I want to quickly update you on my reading progress. I am a few chapters shy of finishing KISS OF DECEPTION! I’ll probably finish it later tonight and start writing a review. Expect that on the blog some time tomorrow.

In the mean time, I had an AHmazing time at SDCC this year. I talk all about it in my new video and also some tips/pointers on going to cons! Check it out

But honestly, this year’s comic con was fantastic. I talked to a bunch of authors (some of whom may be sick of talking to me because I’ve seen them so many times..seriously) such as:

Leigh Bardugo

Laini Taylor

Marie Lu

Kiersten White

Rachel Caine

C.J. Redwine

Ann Aguirre

Shannon Messenger

& Brendan Reichs alongside debut author Natalie Parker

All fantastic people with fantastic books so you should definitely check them out! I did manage to get into some great panels such as the Marvel Studios panel (pics are up on my twitter) and an Entertainment Weekly’s Woman of the World panel featuring some great women of television (pics on twitter page too!). Overall a wonderful experience and I can’t wait to do it again next year! ;D

That’s all for today, guys. Be sure to check out my recap video and I’ll see you soon with a review!

Be well,

What’s In My Bag? + Upcoming Events

Hi all! Happy Friday!
To start, so sorry there is no review up today…there will be tomorrow for your viewing pleasure.
Until then, let’s do a segment of “What’s In My Bag”

Today, I am traveling with KISS OF DECEPTION

I just started this but so far, it’s amazing. I can’t wait to get more into it and then review it for ya’ll!
And yes, it IS signed! The author and people at Mysterious Galaxy are incredible and arranged this nice preorder gift. Thanks to them!

Now onto “Upcoming Events”…

Next week some reviews may be coming in slowly because I will be away at San Diego Comic Con. Yup, you read correctly, COMIC CON 2014. I am so excited! And some great authors will be attending this event from Tahara Mafi to C.J. Redwine to Leigh Bardugo, Veronica Roth, and Marie Lu. Very exciting stuff!
I’ll be sure to take videos that document some highlights of comic con! Also a recap post.

Well, that’s all for today, guys!

Have a great Friday and feel free to let me know what ya’ll are reading this weekend!

Be well,
– Alex
